Urban tribes are those groups of friends, gangs or just groups of young people who dress in a similar way, have common habits and meeting places. When individuals meet voluntarily, for the pleasure of being together or searching for something similar, it is an urban group or tribe.
The origin of the word "urban tribe" emerged in the second half of the twentieth century, when in the big cities began to appear and expand some subcultures among young people such as hippies, skins or punks, who had ways of thinking and to act independently of taxes imposed by the prevailing culture in society. These subcultures expanded from city to city, giving rise to a phenomenon where people identified with the way of being and thinking of their tribe, creating ecosystems of thoughts independent and parallel to those of the rest of society in general.
Habitually the people of an urban tribe are characterized by tending to join with other individuals of their same tribe, and once together share common tastes among its members, such as the way of dressing, the type of music they listen to, the places to those who come, the way of speaking, the ideology, the leisure or the way to spend free time.
To be part of an urban tribe is to look for ways of thinking and feeling similar to one's own, sharing the same culture, and without necessarily being aware of it. The pleasure of belonging to an urban tribe comes from the suspension of the requirement to adapt to an adult or social universe and its rules of thought and conduct.
Sometimes, the urban tribes authorize activities that are within the limits of the moral and social rules: the game, the drink, the scandal, the demands ... However, the activities carried out are not the essential objective of the band: goal is to be together because it is similar.
